INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that happened Saturday evening in the 200 block of N. Mo. 291 Hwy.

Police said around 6:15 p.m., two people were exiting a discount smoke shop when they were approached by a black male armed with a handgun. The suspect struck one victim with the handgun before shooting the second victim in the right calf. Both victims sustained non-life threatening injuries and were treated at local hospitals.

The suspect was described as having as short “afro” style haircut with curls. He fled the scene in what is believed to be 90’s model, maroon Ford Taurus. No further description of the suspect is available at this time and no loss reported by either victim.
